LESSONS - STARTING OUT

WHAT AGE CAN I START DRIVING?

Before you are legally able to drive a car on the UK public roads you must be 17 years of age. If you want to start practising on private land then this is permissible but places like supermarket carparks are NOT public roads.

If you are disabled and recieve Mobility Allowance, the minimum age is 16.

WHAT DO I NEED?

You can apply for your provisional driving licence by completing the D1 application form that is available from the DVLA form ordering service or Post Office® branches. You will also need to enclose original documentation confirming your identity, a passport style colour photograph and the fee of £50.00. Send your completed application and payment to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AD or you may be able to use the premium checking service.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

The current cost of a first provisional licence is £50 for a car, motorcycle or moped. It is advisable to have your eyesight checked to ensure you meet the minimum standard for driving

FIRST DRIVING LESSON

Your first lesson can be both a nervous and an exciting experience for you. We will have spoken previously and arranged to meet at a convenient place, normally at your home or work place.

You will need to bring with you both parts of your provisional driving licence, This will be the card and counterpart (the paper part!)  These are required so that I can make sure you are legally able to drive and to take some details for my School records, insurance and test booking. You will also need payment (cash or cheque) or gift voucher - available from myself.

On your first lesson, we will find a quiet area where time will be taken to introduce you to me, the car, learn about the car controls and instruments and set yourself up for driving comfortably and safely.  We will then talk through the rudiments of moving off and stopping the car, before taking your first steps into the world of driving.  You will be fully supervised throughout the two hour lesson and typically, you will be driving, steering correctly and stopping by the end of the session.

The lesson will finish with some administration, including reading through your personalised instructor assessment and work manual, as well as setting up a future lesson before being returned to your pre-arranged venue.

Preparation will be a key element to your future learning and below are a number of ideas for you to consider for your first lesson:

- Book your first lesson at a time convenient to you.
- Remember to bring along your driving licence. (both parts)
- Check the cost of the lesson and if possible bring the correct fee. (See price list on title page)
- Wear suitable clothing, this includes comfortable shoes or even better trainers
- Try not to worry and when you get into the car take a few minutes to relax
- If you make a mistake, do not worry as I am there to help and advise you.
- Ask any questions you may have on your mind
- Look forward to your lesson.

Your comfort, safety and peace of mind are my priorities at all times and I will happily answer any questions or queries that you may have throughout the lesson, so do not be afraid to ask!!

If you have previous experience of driving, the first lesson will be tailored around your needs following an assessment drive.
